1. SAFETY INFORMATION

1.1 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

Before using this equipment, study the entire owner’s manual to become familiar

with its operation. Do not allow untrained or unauthorized personnel, especially

children, to operate this equipment. Use only factory authorized parts for service.

This manual contains DANGER, WARNING, CAUTION callouts

which must be followed to reduce the possibility of personal injury,

damage to the equipment, or improper service.

This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential

personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this

symbol to avoid possible injury or death.

DANGER indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided,

will result in death or serious injury.

WARNING indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided,

could result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION indicates a hazardous situation which, if not avoided,

could result in minor or moderate injury.

1.2 OPERATING SAFETY

! ADDITIONAL HAZARDS

• Slip/Trip/Fall is a major cause of serious injury or death. Beware of uneven or

slippery work surfaces.

• Exercise care when working in the vicinity of unprotected holes or excavations.

• NEVER allow any person to operate the machine without adequate instruction.

• ENSURE all operators read, understand and follow the operating instructions.

• SERIOUS INJURY could result from improper or careless use of this machine.

• Plate compactors are heavy units and should be positioned by two people of

appropriate strength. Using the lifting handles provided on the machine, along

with correct lifting techniques.

! MECHANICAL HAZARDS

• DO NOT operate the machine unless all protective guards are in place.

• KEEP handles and feet clear of rotating and moving parts as they will cause injury

if contacted.

• ENSURE that the motor operation switch is in the OFF position and the spark

plug ignition lead is disconnected before removing the guards or making

adjustments.

• ENSURE both the machine and the operator are stable by setting up on level

terrain and the machine will not tip over, slide of fall while in operation or

unattended.

• DO NOT leave the machine in operation while it is unattended.

• DO NOT pull the machine backward with transportation wheels, it only should be

pushed forward.

• ENSURE that the walls of a trench are stable and will not collapse due to the

action of the vibration, prior to commencing compaction.

• ENSURE that the area to be compacted does not contain any “live” electrical

cables, gas, water or communication services which may be damaged by the

action of vibration.

• EXERCISE CARE when operating unit. Exposure to vibration or repetitive work

actions may be harmful to hands and arms.

• NEVER stand on the unit while it is operating.

• DO NOT increase the governed no-load motor speed above 3,500 r/min. Any

increase may result in personal injury and damage to the machine.

• BE CAREFUL not to come in contact with the muffler when the engine is hot,

since it can cause severe burns.

• ENSURE that the repairs to the motor and machine are carried out by competent

person.

! FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS

• PETROL is extremely flammable and explosive under certain conditions.

• ENSURE that the petrol is only stored in an approved storage container.

• DO NOT refuel the motor while it is in operation or hot.

• DO NOT refuel the motor in the vicinity of sparks, a naked flame or a person

smoking.

• DO NOT over fill the fuel tank and avoid spilling petrol when refueling. Spilled

petrol or petrol vapour may ignite. If spillage occurs, ensure that the area is dry

before starting the motor.

• ENSURE that the fuel tank cap is securely fitted after refueling.

! CHEMICAL HAZARDS

• DO NOT operate or refuel a petrol or diesel motor in a confined area without

adequate ventilation.

• CARBON MONOXIDE exhaust gases from internal combustion motor driven

units can cause death in confined spaces.

! NOISE HAZARDS

• EXCESSIVE NOISE can lead to temporary or permanent loss of hearing.

• WEAR an approved hearing protection device to limit noise exposure. As required

by Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING

• ALWAYS wear approved hearing protection when working in a confined work

space. Protective goggles and a dust mask should be worn when working in a dusty

environment. Protective clothing and footwear may also be desirable when working

with hot mix bitumen.

1.3 OPERATOR SAFETY WHILE USING INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES

• DO NOT smoke when refueling the engine or during any other fuel handling

operation.

• DO NOT refuel a hot or running engine.

• DO NOT refuel the engine near an open flame.

• DO NOT spill fuel when refueling the engine.

• If fuel is spilled during refueling, wipe it off from the engine immediately and

discard the rag in a safe place. Do not operate the unit if fuel or oil leaks

exist-repair immediately.

• NEVER operate this equipment in an explosive atmosphere.

• NEVER operate any gas powered equipment in a poorly ventilated or enclosed

area.

• NEVER perform any work on the unit while it is running. Before working on it,

stop the engine and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.

• Avoid prolonged breathing of exhaust gases.

• Avoid contact with hot exhaust systems and engine parts.

• Allow engine to cool before performing any repairs or service.

• ALWAYS transport and handle fuel only when contained in approved safety

containers.

• ALWAYS keep the area around the muffler free of debris such as leaves, paper,

cartons, etc. A hot muffler could ignite the debris and start a fire.

1.5 SAFETY AND OPERATING LABELS

Briggs & Stratton (BS436-T) machines use international pictorial labels where needed.

These labels are described below:

3. OPERATION

3.1 OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The following instructions were compiled to provide you information on how to obtain long and

trouble free use of the unit. Periodic maintenance of this unit is essential. Read the manual in its

entirety and follow the instructions carefully. Failure to do so may injure yourself or a bystander.

3.2 BEFORE STARTING

The following Pre-start-up inspection must be performed before the start of each work

session or after every four hours of use, whichever is first. If any fault is discovered, the

compactor must not be used until the fault is rectified.

a) Thoroughly inspect the trowel for signs of damage. Check components are present

and secure. Pay special attention to the belt drive safety guard fitted between

the engine and the vibrator unit.

b) Check the engine oil level and top up as necessary.

c) Check the engine fuel level and top up as necessary.

d) Check for fuel and oil leaks.

1. Push the throttle lever to “O” position.

2. Turn the key switch to “O” (off).

3. Close the fuel valve.

3.5 APPLICATION

The walk-behind trowels offer a reliable and high performance solution for concrete finishing,

trowelling small surfaces, edges and corners.

3.6 OPERATION

After the engine starts, let it warm up by idling for a few minutes.

Test the safety kill switch. If you have the centrifugal type clutch, try momentarily switching the

kill switch to the OFF position. If your safety kill switch is working properly, the engine on your

finisher should stop.

Get into the operator’s position behind the handle. With a secure foothold and a firm grasp on

the handless slowly increase the engine speed until the desired blades speed is obtained. If

your finisher has a hand clutch, set your engine speed with the throttle, then pull on the hand

clutch is fully engaged.

To maneuver the machine, gently lift up on or press down on the main trowel handle. To move

the machine to the operator’s left, lift up on the handle, to move machine to the right -push

down on the handle.

The best method for finishing concrete is to slowly walk backwards with the machine, guiding

the machine from side to side as you do so. See the diagram in the “Suggested Training

Checklist” at the end of this manual.

4. MAINTENANCE

4.1 PERIODIC MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE

Refer to engine manufacturer’s Operation Manual for additional information on engine

maintenance. A copy of the engine Operation Manual was supplied with the machine when it

was shipped. To service the engine, tilt the seat forward.

4.2 V-BELT AND CLUTCH

4.2.1 CHECKING THE V-BELT

After 200 hours of operation, remove the upper belt cover to check the V-belt tension. Tension

is proper if the belt bends about 10mm when depressed strongly with finger between shafts.

Loose or worn V-belts reduces power transmission efficiency, causing weak compaction and

reduces the life of the belt itself.

WARNING

NEVER attempt to check the V-belt with the engine running. Severe

injury can occur if your hand gets caught between the V-belt and the

clutch. Always use safety gloves.

4.2.2 REPLACING THE V-BELT

Remove the belt covers. Engage an offset wrench or the like to vibrator pulley (lower) fastening bolt.

Engage waste cloth or the like at midway of V-belt on the left side and while pulling it back

strongly, rotate the offset wrench clockwise so that the V-belt will come off.

4.2.3 CHECKING THE CLUTCH

Check the clutch simultaneously with V-belt checking. With belt removed, check outer drum

of the clutch for seizure and “V” groove for wear or damage with your eyes. Clean the “V”

groove as necessary. Wear of lining or shoe should be checked with running check. If the

shoe is worn, power transmission becomes deficient and slipping will result.

CAUTION

Whenever the compactor’s vibration becomes weak or lost during

normal operation regardless of operation hours, check the V-belt and

clutch immediately.

4.3 AIR CLEANER

A. The air filter element should be cleaned because a clogged air cleaner can

cause poor engine starting, lack of power and shorten engine life substantially.

B. To clean or replace air filter loosen the wing nut on the air filter housing, remove

the cover and take out air filter cartridge. If only cleaning of the air filter is desired

blow through the air filter cartridge from the inside, moving a jet of dry

compressed air up and down until all dust is removed.

4.4 SPARK PLUG

Check and clean spark plugs regularly. A fouled, dirty spark plug may cause hard starting

and poor engine performance. Set spark plug gap to recommended clearance. Refer to

engine manual.

WARNING

The muffler and engine cylinder become very hot during operation and

remain hot for a while after stopping the engine. Allow engine to cool

before removing spark plug.

NOTICE: A loose spark plug can become very hot and may cause

engine damage.

4.5 TRANSPORTING TROWELS

A. Always shut off engine when transporting machine.

B. Make sure lifting device has enough capacity to hold machine (see nameplate on

machine for weight).

C. Use lifting point (a) when lifting machine.

Trolley wheel (b) as optional is used for short distance transportation.

4.6 TROUBLESHOOTING

4.6.1 MACHINE TROUBLESHOOTING

Safety kill switch not functioning.

Loose wire connections? Check wiring. Replace switch if

necessary.

Worn belts Replace.

Worn out centrifugal clutch?

Replace entire clutch.

Blade pitch? Check blades for consistent pitch. Adjust per Maintenance

section instructions if necessary.

Worn bearings in gearbox?

Rotate input shaft by hand. If it rotates with difficulty

check the input and output shaft bearings. Replace if

necessary.

4.6.2 Engine troubleshooting

5. SERVICE & WARRANTY

Briggs & Stratton construction products are covered by warranty for a period of six (6) months

from the date of purchase against defects in material or workmanship provided that:

• The product concerned has been operated and maintained in accordance with the

operating instructions.

• Has not been damaged by accident, misuse or abuse.

• Has not been tampered with or repaired by any unauthorized person.

The owner is responsible for the cost of transportation to and from the authorized repairer

and the unit is at the owners risk while in transit to and from the repairer.

Impact damage is not covered under warranty. Clutches are not covered under any

warranty.

• ASEGÚRESE de que las paredes de las zanjas sean estables y de que no se

derrumbarán a causa de la vibración, antes de comenzar la compactación.

• ASEGÚRESE de que el área que desea compactar no contenga cables

eléctricos “con corriente”, servicios de gas, agua o comunicaciones que

puedan dañarse por el movimiento de la vibración.

• SEA CUIDADOSO al momento de operar la unidad. La exposición a la vibración

o a movimientos de trabajo repetitivos puede provocar daños en las manos y

los brazos.

• NUNCA se ponga de pie sobre la unidad mientras está en funcionamiento.

• NO aumente la velocidad controlada del motor sin carga a más de 3500 r/min.

Cualquier exceso de velocidad podría provocar lesiones personales o daños en la

máquina.

• TENGA CUIDADO de no entrar en contacto con el silenciador cuando el motor

esté caliente, ya que podría sufrir quemaduras graves.

• ASEGÚRESE de que personas competentes hagan las reparaciones al motor y

a la máquina.

• La NAFTA es extremadamente inflamable y explosiva en determinadas condiciones.

• ASEGÚRESE de que la nafta se almacene solo en un contenedor de

almacenamiento aprobado.
